So, where was I during November?

Busily writing away in a small corner of the internet known as NaNoWriMo! That means National Novel Writing Month, for those who haven’t heard of it. It runs for the entire month of November every year and the goal is to complete a 50,000 word novel in one month.

Find out more on the official website:

And I did it! Well, the novel isn’t finished yet, but I wrote 50K words of it during November!

Here are my stats for the month:

I finished a day early and didn’t write every day. In fact, I fell behind on a couple of occasions but still managed to finish. Some days I wrote less than 100 words, on others I wrote over 5000. While the goal is to write a certain amount every day, it’s not always doable for some people, including me.

So if you’ve always wanted to write a novel but shied away from the idea because everyone told you that “You MUST write every day,” don’t worry. It can be done no matter how often you write.

Here’s a look at my daily word counts for the month so you can see how inconsistent I was my writing habits. This is pretty normal for me whether writing during NaNoWriMo or not. Some days I write several thousand words, on others I barely manage a few hundred.

The numbers fluctuate wildly, but that’s because of…life. I had a number of events to attend and other family things that were more important than writing, but I was still determined to reach that goal.

The bottom line is – writing 50K in a month is possible, and it’s a whole lot of fun!

NaNoWriMo’s community is full of all kinds of writers both professional and hobbyist alike. And there’s no shame in not reaching the goal, lots of people don’t. I’ve done NaNo for a number of years and only won twice.

The purpose isn’t to write perfectly, but to get people in the habit of writing and not being afraid to make mistakes. Writing, like most things, is something that you improve by doing.

Another thing is that you can chat with thousands of other writers from all over the world doing the same thing as you – for an entire month! Talk about motivation!

Have you ever done NaNoWriMo? Do you think you’ll try it?

I don’t know if I’ll take part in 2019 because I have no idea how busy I’ll be, but I’d really like to!
