"Red Haired Elf" Coloured pencils over watercolours, A4

Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils over Sennelier l’aquarelle watercolour pans, with Liquitex acrylic ink on Arches smooth watercolour paper. A4 (8.5×11.5 inches).

Elf number three!! I don’t know about you, but I love red hair! More redheaded elves will no doubt appear throughout this year, but this guy’s the first.

Speaking of firsts, this is my first elf in a more comic/line art style! I loved working on him! I used Liquitex acrylic ink for the lines as well as some gold ink for details in his eyes.

So shiny!

I absolutely LOVE this ink, the only downside is that it isn’t waterproof. And that’s a downside because I’d love to do the line work and then watercolour, but leaky inks won’t allow it. It’s very easy to get around this of course, I just do the lines after my watercolours have dried.

That makes things a little more nerve-wracking, but it’s doable. I learned a funny thing while I was working on the lines – line art is equal parts nerve-wracking and relaxing. I don’t know any other way to describe it, I was both stressed and relaxed as I worked, lol!

At any rate, my next few artworks will be line art based. Follow me on Instagram and Twitter to keep up to date with what I’m doing! I post sketches, works in progress and sneak peeks. #yearofelves
