"Silly Valentine" Coloured pencils over watercolours, A4

Faber-Castell Polychromos and Caran d’Ache Luminance coloured pencils over Sennelier l’aquarelle watercolour pans on Arches smooth watercolour paper. A4 (8.5×11.5 inches).

The first of my themed elves for the year! I have a few other challenges and holidays to go, but Valentine’s day is the first. My original idea was for a more romantic scene with a couple in a romantic setting…but then this silly elf with a rose in his teeth, just kinda popped into my head.

And I went with it. 😉

I did the line work in Photoshop and printed it out instead of using ink at the end. I’ll be getting some waterproof ink soon, so I’ll actually be able to ink my line work! I’m super excited about trying that!

Of course, I can still use my Liquitex ink at the end of the painting, but I’d much rather do the lines first. The Liquitex inks will be perfect for ink washes, so I’ll definitely still use them in the future. *cough*Inktober*cough*

But until then, I’ll just print my lines straight from Photoshop. My printer uses waterproof and lightfast pigmented ink, so I know I can use watercolours over it without any problems.

One thing I learned while painting this silly guy, is that I need to be more bold with my colours. Specifically in the first couple of layers of watercolour. I always end up going over the same area lots of times to darken things, whereas if I simply used darker or more pigmented washes, I’d be done in half the time! I did get better as the painting went on, but it’s something I’ll be focussing on more with my next paintings.

Anyhoos, I hope you like him! 😀
